2016 has been nothing short of phenomenal for Adam Duncan, a student at the Silwood School of Cookery. He was announced as the most recent recipient of the Bryan Montgomery Bursary Fund at the inaugural Food & Hospitality Africa Show incorporating Hostex and IFEA, which took place from 3 to 5 May at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand.
The Bryan Montgomery Bursary Fund was created in honour of founding member Bryan Montgomery, who had a passion for all things culinary and did all he could to assist prospective students who faced budget constraints in terms of furthering their education. Hostex is honoured to have been awarding the fund through SACA annually since 2011.
The primary objective of this bursary fund is to offer financial support to culinary students. The fund offers R35 000 annually to one fortunate student who wishes to study at any SACA-approved culinary institution. The funding, which is paid directly to suppliers, assists in purchasing study aids such as text books, uniforms and cooking utensils. Applications for this bursary are viewed by a fund selection panel.
Adam expressed his gratitude: “The end goal is to own my own restaurant”, he said. “I’d like to build something I can be proud of which will eventually create opportunities for those, like myself, who do not have the means to fund their dreams – this has only been made possible by the generosity of the Bryan Montgomery Bursary Fund”.
Alicia Wilkinson (Commanderie des Cordons Bleus de France), current principal of Silwood has commended Adam on his achievement by saying: “Adam has made everyone at our cookery school proud, as a chef he has worked hard to cultivate the right attitude and love for gaining the skills he requires to become a successful professional chef one day.”
